Apple Watch #FitTechQuest: Two Weeks In

I’m exactly two weeks into owning my Series 2 Apple Watch Sport and I feel amazing. Technically, I started my #FitTechQuest two weeks ago tomorrow, but I wanted to share with you my journey so far.

For clarity, I bought the watch around noon on January 4 (Wednesday), so I used this day to get it all set up and spent hours with my OCD (I’m not really medically OCD) to get everything “just right.” The next day, I took my first step towards a new me. I completed a 30-minute elliptical workout and purposefully took extra trips up and down the stairs without complaining. My first full day with the Apple Watch was a success, as I had completed all three goals (or Activity Rings), which included achieving double the default 250 calories (the only Ring goal you are able to edit), hitting 503 calories burned. I also exceeded the 30-minute Exercise Ring (this goal is static) by exercising 46 minutes and finishing my goals by hitting 13 out of my 12 Stand hours goal. In all of this, I earned three Activity badges, including “First Elliptical Workout” Star, New Move Goal Ring, and the Move Goal 200% Badge. I took 4,610 steps for a total of 2.36 miles for the day.

Below, you’ll see my January so far. I have done well in achieving my Move goal each day since starting, but the next few days, I struggled to get in my groove of meeting my exercise quota. The Stand goal is relatively easy, as the Watch will alert you if you’ve been stagnant for the first 50 minutes of any given hour. It simply reminds you to get up and move around briskly for a minute to get your heart rate up.

Also, I’d like to show you a couple of my days where I closed #alltherings (see below):

Some of the Badges I’ve received in the first two weeks include Longest Move Streak (as of this writing, I have closed the Move ring for 12 days). Another Badge I earned was the Perfect Week (All Activity) Badge. I have earned this award 1 time for completing all three daily Activity goals every day of a single week. Simultaneously, I have achieved the special Badge, which Apple releases a different one to Watch owners from time to time, called the Ring In The New Year Challenge. I earned this Badge by closing all three Activity Rings each day for a full week in January 2017.

As of Monday, January 16, I increased my Move goal to 300 from 250. Yesterday, as we got home around 8:30pm, I was about 100 calories away from getting my first 300% Move goal badge. I looked through my Workouts and found that a quick 13-minute elliptical workout will burn about 100 calories, so I did. Couldn’t help myself 🙂 I also must disclose that part of my workout from time to time (so far) has been to do an actual “Rower” workout for when I play drums. Drums get my heart rate, arms and legs burning so I don’t want to miss the opportunity to count that as a workout. Yesterday, I did two ellipticals, a “Rower”/drum workout, and Day 2 of my Couch to 5K app, which included 30-minutes of walk/run sets. As you’ll see below in my Watch screenshot, my totals were as follows:

320% Move goal (Total calories burned): 956/300

343% Exercise goal: 103 min./30 min.

Stand hours goal: 13/12

img_0944 On Day 1 of my Couch to 5K program, I made a distance of 1.5 miles in 30 minutes. During this run, I had a walking distance of 0.87 miles and a running distance of 0.96 miles. My walking pace was 19:58/mile and running pace was 13:30/mile.

On Day 2, I made a distance of 1.98 miles in 30 minutes. I had a walking distance of 0.92 miles and a running distance of 1.07 miles. My walking pace was 18:31/mile and running pace was 12:12/mile.

After I’ve completed the full program (9 weeks long), I will have a breakdown of my performance improvements over time for all of you math nerds out there. 🙂

For now, that’s where I stand. I hope you’ll leave your comments and let me know if you’re doing anything (with or without an Apple Watch) to get in shape this year. If you are using any technology to help you in your journey, I’d love to hear about it. I’m looking for Guest Blog posts to feature here, so be sure to let me know! 🙂

Until next time, stay strong on your #FitTechQuest!
